iKid, iCan

I'm trying to think of the transition of slate to paper to pcs, and it seems to go back quite a long way. Just going back one step from what I'm used to (paper) to the slate board era would be nuts. It is amazing the interest that a computer or any other recent technology keeps from students. When we talk about best practice in meeting students where they are developmentally, I think their ability to work with technology is a part of that. Their developmental level is at a computer interface. It isn't worse or better than when we were their age, but it is different, and we cannot teach to what we were like as students, but who is actually in our classroom.

  1. Sara,

You're right, we do have to know and understand our students and where they are coming from in all facets of their lives; that includes their technology backgrounds. As educators, we should take advantage of the immense knowledge most of our students have of technology and ride the wave!

  2. Although I do like the idea of teaching students ways of doing things that are both technology based and not, I think you do have a good point that we need to teach to who is in our classroom. It is hard to do things differently than what we are used to but, as teachers, we SHOULD do things differently, and have our students best interest at heart!

  3. Agree!
Teachers need to keep up to date with the newest technology in order to keep up and keep their students motivated. Technology will most likely always be changing. The more teachers use it, the more it will benefit the learning of students.

p.s. I like the cat and doggie pictures!! :)

  4. I agree too! Technology has changed dramatically in just the past 5 years. You can't even compare the technology we had in elementary school to what elementary kids have today! We have to adapt and learn things the way they are for our students rather than relying on how it was for us!

PS I love the puppy & kitty pictures too!! :)

  5. I feel we are teaching at an interesting time. When it comes to technology and education we will have to be pioneers. Most of us with the exception of this class, haven't had innovative techniques in technology modeled for us. To me, it feels partly exciting and partly overwhelming!

  6. So we are all in agreement it seems :), but the only thing else I have to say about this is that if we are diligent with keeping up with technology then we won't have as much trouble with the evolving world. Keep up or get out! lol.
